Dental Exam

During a thorough dental examination the whole mouth is inspected. The type of things we look for are overgrown teeth, malocclusions, loose teeth, retained incisors, infections and ulcers. After diagnosis, any treatment, if required is completed.

An examination of this type requires the animal to be safely restrained. My purpose built portable crush ensures the comfort and safety of both alpacas and handlers.

The mouth and teeth must be examined both visually and by touch. The mouth is kept open with the use of a dental speculum/gag and the mouth is cleaned out with suction. A headlamp is used to illuminate the mouth.

Any problems are recorded on a dental chart along with a record of required treatment. This is kept by the owner for future reference.

The gag is put on the alpaca so the mouth can be held open.
